Project Overview
In fall 2021, a leading producer of wood, pulp, tissue, and paper turned to KPIC after experiencing consistent underperformance from a previous subcontracted maintenance provider. KPIC was brought on to deliver comprehensive millwright and electrical services on a continuous 12-hour day and night shift schedule, operating 365 days a year. The scope included preventative maintenance, emergency response, and new equipment installations throughout the plant.
Project Goals
- Restore Operational Reliability: Ensure consistent uptime of critical mill equipment such as debarkers, planers, scanners, hydraulic units, and chain drags.
- Implement Preventative Maintenance: Reduce emergency downtime by improving maintenance planning and execution.
- Build Long-Term Team Stability: Recruit and retain a reliable workforce for a rigorous 14-days-on/14-days-off rotation.
Technologies and Innovations
- Workforce Strategy and Incentives: Introduced competitive compensation packages and travel mileage programs to attract and retain qualified personnel for demanding shift rotations.
- Flexible Support Model: Provided both emergency and planned support, adapting KPIC resources dynamically to the mill’s evolving operational needs.
- Integrated Communication Systems: Maintained clear, consistent client communication to ensure alignment and swift response to all plant needs.
Results
- Uninterrupted Plant Operations: Met all expectations for uptime and reliability across all mill areas.
- Improved Employee Retention: Stabilized the maintenance team through strategic incentives and work-life balance solutions.
- Strong Client Relationship: Built a collaborative partnership rooted in trust, responsiveness, and performance consistency.
